NOPD Traffic Enforcement Leads to Continued Reductions in Fatal Crashes

NEW ORLEANS — Traffic fatalities in New Orleans continue to decline as the New Orleans Police Department maintains directed traffic patrols, DWI enforcement and driver education efforts across the city.

According to NOPD, fatal crashes are down 24% so far in 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. The department credits motorists with paying greater attention to traffic laws and overall roadway safety.

Traffic Enforcement: September 20–26

During the week of September 20 through September 26, NOPD traffic officers reported:

  • 836 traffic citations issued
  • 230 vehicle stops conducted
  • 8 DWI arrests by the department’s DWI Unit

Parking Enforcement

NOPD also released parking enforcement statistics for the same period.

Ticket Writing Unit

  • 2,051 citations issued
  • 159 vehicle boots applied

Towing Unit

  • 125 vehicles towed

“As we remain committed to reducing fatalities and all vehicle crashes, we are encouraged to see that the public is paying attention and being more mindful behind the wheel,” said Captain Anthony Micheu, commander of NOPD’s Traffic Division.

Micheu said the majority of fatal crashes in New Orleans this year have involved motor vehicles and pedestrians. He urged drivers to be especially vigilant for pedestrians and asked pedestrians to cross in well-lit areas and make sure roadways are clear before crossing, even when they have the right-of-way.

NOPD continues to urge motorists to remain alert, obey traffic laws and wear seat belts.

Residents who see a junked or abandoned vehicle in their neighborhood can report it by calling the City of New Orleans 3-1-1 line.
